I shall investigate these things.

It is quite likely that the tins from baked beans are lined with plastic.

And the problem with most of the solutions are that they are expensive, and we're on a really minimal budget (£4 per child, £0 per adult... though I'm sure we'll spend more than that!)Rosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05887363735135158964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328032871173810204.post-85158287600218778532008-10-03T16:53:00.000+01:002008-10-03T16:53:00.000+01:00Coffee - try Atkinson's on China Street. It would be filter coffee, though - you would need to buy filter papers or use a cafetiere.

You can probably get squash in glass bottles with only a tiny bit of plastic in the lid. These tend to be more expensive, though.

I can't quite solve the hot chocolate dilemma, but if you were to buy cocoa powder (cardboard box, plastic lid) and add sugar you would get a similar effect. Instead of hot chocolate you could try warm milk with honey, or something.

Surely flapjacks can be made using oil instead of spread... How about that olive oil from the market? Alternatively, try the oil section in Sainsbury's - you may be able to get some in glass bottles with minimal plastic in the lid.

You could make muesli (or maybe buy it) with Single Step ingredients.

Are baked beans not OK as they come from tins?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328032871173810204.post-84509774696516753642008-09-22T13:39:00.000+01:002008-09-22T13:39:00.000+01:00I think the reason was to keep things simple for t...I think the reason was to keep things simple for the YHA staff. It keeps all the bedding together, so they don't have to give 4 individual items to each guest. (And, having worked in a youth hostel for a summer, I can understand the need for that - so many people would end up a pillowcase short, or without a sheet - it would be a nightmare!) But I have written to the YHA asking if they can come up with a greener alternative...Nicolahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00396376430513107990noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328032871173810204.post-91787758855787808922008-09-17T23:18:00.000+01:002008-09-17T23:18:00.000+01:00I'm glad you clarified about the penguin being cho...I'm glad you clarified about the penguin being chocolate :-)Roshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01478988337847860852noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328032871173810204.post-76580078696457228012008-09-16T15:16:00.000+01:002008-09-16T15:16:00.000+01:00That just sounds crazy.
